Description
Wood sculpture ' Diving '
Wood sculpture from the series “Body Postures” in which I am looking for typical body positions during certain activity, in this case diving.
This wood sculpture sculpture is made from two curved, tapered, 4-sided shape cupboard legs.
In order to obtain the correct appearance of the whole, the element of great height also had to be added.
Hence the placement of the statue on the fairly high pedestal.
In addition to the literal meaning of the image, the image also has a symbolic meaning: successfully reaching the top gives wings.
This is also expressed in the ladder at the base of the pedestal. The ladder is too short to reach the top. Just as there is no direct path to get to the top.
The small additions and accents help determine the final desired sculpture.
Body posture "Diving"
The challenge for this wood sculpture was capturing action: the split second when the diver decides to jump from a great height.
The upper body is bent horizontally and the gaze is directed downwards in supreme concentration.
The two blue feathers indicate the position of the arms.
Arms that turn into wings as this dive from great hight evokes the thrill of flying through the air.
The colour blue refers to water / sky.
Concerning the diving posture
The diving posture on a springboard, as used in diving, requires a combination of technique, balance, and strength. Here's a description of the typical diving posture on a springboard:
Starting Position: The springboard is inclined upwards, and the diver typically begins at its end.
The diver stands with toes over the edge of the board, facing towards the water.
The arms are usually stretched above the head.
Body Position: The diver's body is straight and aligned with the board.
The back is straight, the abdominal muscles are engaged, and the head is in line with the spine.
Legs: The legs are slightly bent at the knees, and the feet are pointed downwards to maximize the push-off force.
Arms: The arms are stretched above the head with palms facing downwards.
This helps maintain stability and promotes a streamlined body position during the dive.
Focus: The diver directs their gaze towards the target in the water, usually the point where the dive should end.
This helps maintain the correct body position and ensures an accurate landing.
Balance: The diver evenly distributes their weight across the board to maintain stability during the push-off.
This requires good balance and concentration.
Push-off: The diver utilizes the energy built up by bending the board and the muscles to generate a powerful push-off.
This is usually achieved through a rapid extension of the legs and the use of the arms to create additional momentum.
Transition to the Dive: After the push-off, the diver begins their diving motion, with the body in a stretched, streamlined position as it moves through the air.
The diving posture on a springboard thus requires not only physical strength and flexibility but also precision, balance, and concentration to execute a successful dive.
